Tonight, Matthew and I were putting the groceries away and he said…
“Mom, if you have some time, could you look at my writing?”
“What are you writing, Matthew?” Thinking that this kid abhors writing, so why is he voluntarily writing and why do I need to look at it…
“A secret admirer letter to Brooke”
Jaw. Drop.
Let me give you some background…
Matthew had a long term “girlfirend”, Julia, up until a few months ago.
They did everything together…and when I say everything, I’m not kidding… I’ve taken them to the movies… Her mother took them to the park.. they talked on the phone… these kids were tight…
But sometime around his birthday, they broke up… apparently, the distance (not being in the same class) was just too much… well, the distance coupled with the fact that some retards in lunch had to ruin it for the rest of them so that now all the students HAVE to sit with their own class…. meaning Matthew and Julia lost their only 20 minutes together, five days a week…
a real tragedy…
he was devastated…
until two weeks ago when he swore me to secrecy about his crush on Brooke and how he feels that “God is telling him that Brooke is the girl for him…” — another story for another time, but apparently they keep getting paired together…
I did tell my mother about Brooke, but I swore her to secrecy as well…
And then, no more was said about Brooke…
until tonight…
when I became the editor-in-chief of Matthew’s love notes…
He left it on my desk and when I finished in the kitchen, I sat down at my desk and there it was…
Dear Brooke,
You are special, kind, caring, and even more special. Your eyes glisten in the moon light. Your teeth are the shiniest of all that I have seen.
Your Secret Admirer
WHAT????????????????????????????????????????
A few questions ran thought my head…
I wasn’t aware that 10 year old girls had eyes that glistened…
How does my son know about glistening?
How come I’ve never gotten a note about MY glistening eyes or shiny teeth?
I grabbed the phone and snuck into the bathroom closet and LOST it as I called my mother…
I didn’t want him to hear me…
he eventually asked me what I thought…
I asked him if he had seen Brooke’s eyes in the moonlight… (doesn’t this kid only see her during the day???) “It’s a figure of speech, Mom. To make her feel special.”
I told you. Come hell or high water, my son is going to be a GOOD MAN.
He did eventually admit that he had heard it in the movies and when I told him that it was a bit over board for a 10 year old, he said, “Ok, we’ll rework it tomorrow.” And off he went to work with his legos..
So, Brooke….
I have one thing to say to you….
Break his heart and deal with the wrath of mama….
Until next time…
Heather

Oh, how sweet! And you’re right – it’s a good man who tries to make a girl feel special.
Awwww… That is so wonderful. I hope she’s a good girl.
