I don’t push my children to dig into God’s word rather I let them lead me to where they are and we go from there. Yes, they participate in Sunday School two Sunday’s a month (when it’s my weekend) and Children’s Church those same Sundays, but that’s all they get there…
At home?
We talk about it but I never push.
Over the past few weeks more and more has been said at home and Samara asked me when she was going to get her very own Bible. She’s proudly perched the Bible that I travel with (because it’s smaller than the Bible I use every day) on her new desk (and before you ask, no. The house still isn’t put back together yet.)
I had to go to LifeWay anyway to pick up the workbook for the new Daniel Study that we started at church and I decided that this child could have her very own Bible. Oh the choices! It was like a kid in a candy store. I wanted one that had larger print, but that wouldn’t do for her. She wanted one that had gold or silver coating on the outside of the pages. We filled through every Bible the store had before she finally selected the perfect Bible. (And it was on sale… yippie!)
She had also purchased a devotional Friday night at Wal-Mart and so I told Matthew to go back and find a devotional (as Sam’s is for girls). He was back there forever, which was good because it took us forever to find a Bible suited for my Princess (and they even have a Princess Bible… i couldn’t believe she didn’t pick it!)
When I went back to find him, he was looking at what appeared to be a large magazine. I asked him what he found and he began to tell me all about Bible Man.
I told him that I would get it for him if he would read it (it’s the whole new testament.)
We came home, $80 poorer when all was said and done, but we were all happy with our purchases.
Later on that evening when I went to tuck him in I asked if he would like to read Bible Man together. We decided that we would tackle a few chapters each day and work our way through.
Tonight was rush rush (of course) with the kids at two different places while I was in my class…. and then I had to pick them up. And my mother called during all of this and then we got home and I was late for a seminar that my business partner and I were hosting. (She’s a doll when it comes to covering for me.)
I jotted her an IM that we had just gotten home and I would be there as soon as I got the kids in bed.
When I came back to the computer, the seminar was over… know what the topic was? Work-Life Balance… I’m thinking I needed that one.
Anywho, the reason that it took me so long to get them into bed was because when I went back to tuck Matthew in, he said “Mom, what about Bible Man? I want to know what happens next to Jesus.”
I didn’t have it in me to tell him no, not tonight.
And so we read another 2 chapters in the book of Matthew. Before we began reading, I quizzed him a bit about yesterday’s reading and darned if that kid didn’t tell me exactly what happened. I was elated.
We finished reading and did his devotion (all about trusting God) and when I stopped reading all I heard was “Whoa”
Matthew’s starting to get it… and it’s all thanks to Bible Man.
That and I’m spending quality time in the evenings reading to them…
and life… is good….
Until next time…
Heather

Heather, that is wonderful! Glad he is understanding and that you two are reading together. I find that truly terrific! Way to go!
what a lovely story – so proud of you for not saying no even though you were running late and had something else calling for your attention. it is so easy to think that we will always get to those things tomorrow.
This is good stuff, Heather. God is good!
And now I have an award for you. Come and see!
I have seen this BibleMan series of stuff in Lifeway bookstore. Videos, books and magazines.
Next time we go in I’ll pick something up for my youngest.
Thanks for your words of sympathy on my blog.
