I Love The Snow… But Only When It Plays By My Rules

So it snowed yesterday.

And I?  Have no pictures.  I think the kids might have taken a few, but I stayed inside…

All day.

And really, I ignored my camera for the sole fact that after 17″ in December, the 9″ we got yesterday pales in comparison.

Now, please don’t get me wrong; I was insanely excited that we got snow.

It happened in the window where I embrace the cold, winter weather.  I have just a few rules for snow/ice.

First, it must happen on the weekend and second, it must accumulate to where the city freaks out and everything is shut down.

If it does not meet both?

Then I don’t want it, I hate it, and I will go into a tailspin trying to reroute everything that it’s messing up in my plan.

This snow has been talked about all week and since I’m a planner, it had me a little bit in a tizzy because I couldn’t plan entirely.  So I had a “no snow” plan and a “snow” plan, praying that my “snow” plan would be the one that I needed to implement.

Only because it was to happen after 5pm on Friday AND because they were calling for 6-12″…clearly both meeting my “bring it on” snow mentality.

So, short of walking in the snow from my house to the boy’s because when it snows, I’m not getting out for at least a day, the snow was VERY welcome.

But it had me worried.  It was supposed to start around 6 and we didn’t see the first flake until almost 11.

But when I arose from my peaceful slumber Saturday morning and looked out my window, it was clear that I would be donning my boots, hats, gloves, scarf, 13 other items of clothing under my coat to make the trek to the boy’s house.

Again.

I am THRILLED that he just lives around the corner from me.

Being snowed in without the boy?

Well, to put it bluntly, would just SUCK.

Anywho.

My “snow” plan involved nothing.

And that’s what I did.

Thing 1, in order to earn money to pay his new, welcome-to-the-real-world-i-wanted-a-cellphone-and-now-i-have-one-but-have-to-pay-for-it, bill was told that he was in charge on the driveway at the boy’s.

His “contract” states that he must work 6 hours per month to pay for the cell phone, and we knew that he would not be shoveling for 6 hours, but the fact that I could look out the window and not have to worry about it was awesome.  And worth the reduction in hours for both of us.  But I think the best part was watching the look on his face right as he was shoveling the last of the driveway and the snow plow came by covering the entrance he had just dug.

He watched it come.

He watched it go.

And if he were the type of kid that cursed, I think he might’ve.

But he didn’t.  I was proud.  He just went out and shoveled a little more.

The boy, as usual, was itching for a reason to get out and drive in it.  He walked all through the house looking for something, anything, that we might need…even though I, along with the rest of the world, had raided the store Thursday night in preparation for the upcoming threat of snow.

(But can I state that Thursday is my normal grocery night?  I would’ve been there anyway and don’t want people to think that I need to rush out and buy groceries because they are calling for snow.)

He finally determined that we needed dish soap.

Yes.

Dish soap.

So I sent him and the boys to the store for dish soap and some snacks so we could have them when we watched the Money Pit.

And speaking of?

Thing 1 had a friend over and they got engrossed in Rock Band, so the boy, Thing 4 and I watched the movie upstairs on the laptop while they played.

And Thing 2?  Well, I’m not sure what she thinks about all of this.  Her friend called Friday night after we got home from the gym and invited her to spend the night since it was going to snow.  Because there is no school tomorrow I probably won’t see her until tomorrow night sometime.

She’s got such the social life.

We took her some more socks last night, but only because she asked, and because the boy wanted to go out and drive in the snow some more.  Had there been dry roads and she called and made that request, he probably would’ve told her to suck it up and wear dirty socks… but not when there is fun to be had.

And so while I prayed that the roads would ice over during the night so that I could have one more day to sit and do nothing, my prayer went unanswered and we found ourselves trekking to church this morning.  There were 15 people there total and we accounted for 5 of them.

But it was a fun service and they’ve cancelled service for tonight so I came back and made dinner for lunch and then they all went outside to play.

Me?

I’m inside.

I am quite cozy here and it’s quiet.  I paid the bills.  I did some laundry.  I straightened up a bit.

They went and dug my car out, which I begged them not to do.

Because if my car is cleaned off, and the roads are relatively clear, then that means I might have to go somewhere.

And I just don’t want to.

But seeings how I actually do have work to do tomorrow and appointments I guess my self-imposed rules of snow are holding true.

But that doesn’t mean that I can’t be STOKED beyond measure that they are calling for more winter weather next Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

As long as it starts after 5?

And is enough to shut the city down?

Then BRING IT ON!!!

Until next time…

I agree whole heartedly with those snow rules, unfortunately the snow did not obey. We had our major snow Thursday night. Work let us out early Thursday, and like a kid I hoped we would be closed Friday…didn’t happen. All of 4 people showed up for work in my department including me. It’s a good thing we have 4Wheel Drive and the hubs loves to drive in it. My hubs is a lot like your boy he would never want to get out on a nice clear day for anything, but bring on the snow and ice and he’s all for it.

The dishes were backing up. We HAD to have dish soap. Life or death situation. Otherwise I would have never even considered risking going out in the snow. Just like the lack of tape during the last snow was an emergency worthy of a trip to the store.

i am fascinated by snow but only because i never get to see it here. someday perhaps i’ll be lucky enough to really experience it and i’ll take your rules along with me.
