Because this would affect you, I’m asking you…

in blogging,Thoughts...

I have a good buddy here, locally, named Josh.

(Don’t go there yet.  Please?  Really.  Because if you click on that link right now and see his site, and the pictures of his gorgeous family and his words of wisdom, you will forget all about this post.  And really?  I need you to read this post.  Because I need to know what you think.  So after you weigh in, then you can go and visit THE Josh Perrington.  — Not to be confused with THE Gary Cope.  I know.  My friends sound pretty important. They are.)

So, anywho.  My buddy, Josh.

He’s a genius.  I like him alot.  I think he likes me, too.

I make this deduction because he continues to respond to my tweets, emails and phone calls and has coffee with me.  But maybe he just does that because we invite his family to the lake or because he knows that I know WordPress and he needs me to fix his feed problems at 3pm on a icy/snowy Tuesday afternoon.

I don’t know.

Regardless, when we come together, either in person, phone, DM on Twitter, or even BlackBerry IM — amazing things happen.  Like today…

When he called me on this snowy/icy afternoon because his feed wasn’t working (::grin::) we found out why the BlackBerry is called the BlackBerry.  That discovery in and of itself is not the amazing part, but the discussion that led to that was, and in a few months, I’m going to be able to tell you the WHOLE story… because it’s REALLY exciting.  (More so for him than me, but then again, he invested money.  I just invented the quirkiness of my brain and my ability to think when he was stuck somewhere.)

(Side Note: The BlackBerry is called that because the buttons on the originals (which were mostly black) looked like seeds.  Now you know.)

So anywho, when Josh and I talk, my brain starts rolling in 5,000 different directions and I feel the need to share some of these genius thoughts with anyone (like all 5 of you who still read my blog) who will listen.

The problem?

What outlet do I use?

I pink puffy heart Twitter.  I do.

But brevity is not my strong point, so the ideas often take more than 140 characters.  Additionally?  I think that if I could flesh out these real life business examples about relationship building, marketing, social networking, blogging, etc, people would take interest in them.

The reality of it is, I’m a smart cookie.  No, I don’t know it all.  I’ll never claim to know it all, but just like you learn things from others and pass them on, so do I.

Now.  I have this website called heatherjacobson.com.

Don’t go there.

Please.

It’s such a work in progress and it’s been in progress.  Like when I found out I was loosing my job in March, I started to redo it so that I could have an online “resume” to showcase my talents and abilities but then I got a job before I finished it.

And it’s just kinda been sitting there ever since.  There are business/marketing ideas and writings on there.

But managing two websites?

I just don’t know if that’s feasible for me.

Two years ago, I would’ve NEVER entertained the idea of putting a marketing idea or social networking/relationship building post on this blog, but times are changing.  Most all of my readers are also looking to make the most of social media AND they are marketing their blogs (or businesses).

And since my writing style is the same whether I’m telling you about how my kids are driving me crazy or the latest marketing gimmick I thought up?  I could see how I might possibly mesh them all in here.

BUT!

Not if you never, ever want to see my brain in action that way.  If you’re content with just seeing the side of Heather that attempts to be grounded in her faith, and struggles every day to maintain her sanity with the workings of her personal world; a woman who might seem to never have it all together and NEVER want to see her BRAIN at work — which can be scary, I’ll be honest — then that’s fine.

You are the people that keep me coming back and writing here every day when I don’t feel like working or dealing with kids regularly when ever I feel like it.  I want this to be a place that you enjoy coming to and one that you keep coming back to.

Because we all know that you’ll never leave a comment that says, “Heather, I like you and all, but I’m just not interested in this geek speak.”  You’ll just stop coming back, stop reading, and never say a word.

And I don’t want that to happen.

For years, I tell people who ask for my marketing “advice” that they need to know who their audience is.  They need to know what their audience wants to hear so they can deliver the right message.

I’m asking you, right now, so as to not make a huge “marketing” mistake (and not JUST a marketing mistake, but a relationship mistake as well) that could affect the friendships that I’ve made through this vessel… “who are you?  what do you want to read about?”

You’re NOT going to hurt my feelings by telling me to take it over there.

If that’s where my brain needs to release this information, then that’s where I’ll release the information.  Over there.  Where it’s wanted and not here, where it’s not.

But if you think that it’s something you would like?

Then I’ll keep it here.  Everything.  All of me.  One outlet.

Thoughts?

(After you comment? then you can go meet Josh.  Because you should.  He’s a genius.  And an AWESOME person.  And while you’re there?  Subscribe to his blog.  Because it’s working now.)

Until next time…

well, i think we’re at the point in our relationship at which i’ll love ya no matter what :D but really, i don’t think it would bother me either way. if it ever bugs me in the future i promise to let you know. i love hearing your thoughts and quirky stories and i have always enjoyed your writing style. i bet you could make geek speak 1)sound interesting to me and 2) understandable to a non geek like me. who knows, maybe i’ll learn a thing or two along the way!

My 2 cents, currently worth $0.0174, would be to have one website with two separate areas. Don’t know if this is easy or even possible, but you could have a leader in the “personal” blog section with the title of your “professional” blogs as they are created, so if its something your personal friends find interesting, they are just a click away from profound enlightenment. But, I do wonder if the people you would refer to your professional site would be people you want to see your personal thoughts. Maybe the personal area would be passworded with something super easy, just a formality really, so only people who actually know you, or come to know you, hear all the wonderful stuff you think.

Oh, and I figured out why I couldn’t get your blog to scroll – it takes a double click instead of a click-and-drag, at least on my computer. Now I won’t feel left out :)

I’m adding my .02 as well.
I’m not sure yet.
I think it best to be separate. I would certainly check it out as I claim to be into social media, but on my own time and depending on how “techie” it would be. I’d probably skim through and go on. Though I think if you put a spin (your spin) to it that could be entertaining I might stick with it and read. (shrug) I just don’t know.
At this point I’m sounding cranky and not making sense, so I’ll stop. :P

I love you no matter what you write :) But I think Beth’s suggestion would work well for you — 2 separate categories. I’ve been thinking about doing that on my blog for-e-vah but haven’t gotten around to it either. And I’ve also got a WP-specific blog that I think I’ve been *thinking* on for almost a year now. Gotta love procrastination!

I think that having 1 blog but 2 categories works well….Like Ree’s Pioneer Woman site….several categories and you can click whatever you want. i would check out your blog however you set it up just cuz I think you are amazing, though so whatever!!
