I Have Slowly Morphed Into a Weather Junkie…

February 2, 2010

in Weather

or maybe, the better term to use is Weather Worry Wart.

Yes, I have snow rules.

And I think that’s pretty flexible when it comes to snow.  People here either love it or hate it.

There are very few “on the fence” people.

Leave it to me to be in the minority.

The reality of it is, for me to be snowed in and love it, is a huge growth step for me.  When I’m snowed in, I’m FORCED to do nothing and I’ve embraced it.

HUGE deal for me.

HUGE.

But I’ve learned that when the city shuts down on a Saturday, I get a day off that I don’t normally get.  My week is packed full, my Saturday consists of Upward Basketball most of Saturday and then working on projects in the afternoon, or hanging with the kids and then Sunday? That’s church, housework, and church.

So to get a Saturday off?  A Saturday to sleep in?

I’ve come to the conclusion that the massive snow on the weekends is God’s way of telling me to take a day off without feeling guilty about it.

However, today?

I’m sitting at home, working.

Please know, I’m grateful that I can work from home.  I’m tickled pink that my boss is HUMAN and tells us to be safe and stay off the road because we do have the technology to work remotely.

And the reason I’m sitting at home?

Ice/snow/rain… you name it and we’re getting it today.

Sometime.

The kids are off school today.

And since we’re calling for a “wintry mix” (i hate that word) today, my guess is, since the side roads still aren’t clear from last weekend, that the kids will be out tomorrow as well.

There’s a chance that they will go back Thursday, but then Friday?

They’re saying that we could get DUMPED on again.

And then the extended forecast shows snow from Friday through Wednesday, but the accumulation for early next week haven’t been speculated on yet.

Know how I know that?

Because I now SCOUR the internet looking for accumulation totals.

And when I say SCOUR?  I mean SCOUR.  Where as I used to rely on Twitter and the hashtag #swvasnow that’s not enough for me anymore.

I mean, I’ve bookmarked the National Weather Service website and the local tv station radar and I check often.

And then, I’ve gone so far as to look at the Farmer’s Almanac online for what they will give me for free.  And really?  I want to buy one.  I want to know what EVERYONE is telling me about the weather here.

Because I’m a planner.

I’m even knowledgeable on the HISTORY of snow fall.  And random facts.  Like, can I tell you that as of today, before this hit, Roanoke had a foot more snow for the year than DETROIT.

And do you know why I don’t like the weekday snow?

It’s expensive.

The drop in rate at the day care center is expensive.

And when the weather hits in the week, it only comes on days that I have client meetings.

Which, I’ll be honest.

That affects my pay.

So, I’m going to work today and watch the radar.

I’m going to pray that the snow this weekend starts after 5pm and stops Sunday sometime so the main roads can be cleared.

Because I’m digging the Saturdays off.

But really?  Let’s get rid of this middle of the week snow.  Because I have more important things to do than sit here and stress over the radar and how it’s affecting my checkbook.

Until next time…
