I Miss Thing 2

I hate shopping.  Sometimes it’s inevitable though.  When it is, or when it comes to home wares, or decorating, I take my sidekick… Thing 2.

Not only does she love to shop, she loves to spend other people’s money and she’s got a keen eye for colors and how things will work.  I’m not lying when I tell you that she picked out the kitchen floor in the new house.  She showed it to us and the hubs and I kinda looked at her funny but after begging us to just take the sample to see, we figured it wouldn’t hurt.

That floor is now in the kitchen and we love it.

The colors in her room?  When she picked them at first, I thought they were horrid.  After painting her room, everytime I walk in there, I think about how much I like them.

She’s good.

So, I’ve been storing some money away for things that we need at the new house.  It’s not much, but there were a few things that we needed and things that I wanted to get for the kids so that they had the rooms they’ve wanted… something to make the move a little less stressful and a little more exciting.

The problem?  No one cares.

Seriously.

I took them all shopping with an open checkbook, something I NEVER do, for them to pick out rugs and comfortors and sheets…. none of them cared.

I kept asking thing 1, knowing that he doesn’t do the whole color thing, “do you like this one?”

“I don’t care.”

“How about this one?”

“I don’t care.”

I was hoping that at some point, I would pick something out, it would catch his eye and he would love it.  Didn’t happen.

But if Thing 2 were here?  She’d be up and down those aisles, picking out all the things that would match, and coordinate, and absolutely fall in love with a color scheme and beg me to buy it.  She would be animated, rushing up and down aisles, scanning for exactly what she was looking for.  She’d tell me time and time again that it would look awesome and time and time again I would ask, “are you sure?”

“Just trust me mom.  You can always bring it back.”

But I wouldn’t.  Because my skepticism would diminish the moment we got home, put it in the room, and it looked amazing.  And then I would have to apologize.

She’s the same way with clothes.

I know that she’s having a good time with my parents, leaving Grand Island, Nebraska today and making her way to Rapid City by Saturday.  And less kids underfoot has been a help with the move and the boxing and the stress levels.

But really?

I can’t wait for her to come home so that I can take her to pick out the stuff for her room… because I know that she’ll care.

And that?  Will totally make me happy.

Because all I want is for all of them to LOVE their rooms… and I have a feeling that she’s the only one that will express how much she loves it…

One out of five isn’t bad, right?

Until next time..

Sorry hun. You’re the lone girl in a slew of boys right now. Thing 4 doesn’t count. Because really? She’s as clueless as the rest of us. Its not that the boys and I don’t care its just that we don’t know what looks good. Case and point? How many times have you looked at us in the morning after we have put our clothing choices on for the day and asked us if we are color blind? We do love you and we want to help but we really are clueless. :(

My third daughter has been advising me on clothing and color combinations since she was two. And, yes, she’s very good at it. I had no idea it was such a skill. I never really cared about clothes.

And, yes, I am color blind. So I can use all the help I can get.
