Achieving Genius Status

Mary DeMuth gave a presentation at She Speaks last weekend and in her talk she mentioned a book she read that stuck out in her mind.  I wish I could remember the name of the book, but I can’t.  It doesn’t matter.

The premise of the book states that it takes 10,o00 hours of doing something to become a genius at it.

And that number? 10,000?

Has totally stuck with me.

Mary stated that she spent the NINETIES (as in, a whole decade) writing. 10,000 hours of unpublished words to become a genius and while I’ve been writing for quite some time, I don’t think I’ve quite hit the mark on genius status.

But, I’ve tried to think about where else I might have hit that magic number of 10,000…

This morning I grabbed the calculator and realized that twelve hours a day, times 365 days a year, times thirteen years equals 56,940 hours.

I should be a genius, then, right?

WRONG.

You see, those hours are the hours that I have spent parenting.

And I am NOT a genius at it.

I decided to post this and include some great Biblical wisdom… something to tie this all together and say that it’s okay to NOT be a genius even thought I’ve been doing it for almost 57,000 hours.  I mean, I should be a genius five times over, right?

But my limited Bible knowledge prohibited me from just knowing.  A search through my “Where to find it in the Bible” proved fruitless for me as well.

But that’s okay.  I’m no where near 10,000 hours in Bible studies… but I’m working on it.  And I think that blessings come when you just give it your best shot….

genius or not.

Until next time…

Well, here is to the goal of 10,000 hours of bible study…and even 1000 hours would be a good starter goal for me. Beth Moore sure gets some hours racked up for me…gotta go dig out another study and a calculator.

I’m wondering if God ever questions the genius of HIS parenting skills because he’s got waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more hours into it!
