I love to read.
And my friend, Snarky Cindy, got me a Nook awhile back. If you don’t have one, you should. It’s the best thing… EVER.
I love it. It might have saved my marriage. No longer do I have to play iPod games in the silence because I must go to bed when the hubs does, but he’s tired and I’m not. (The real reason I have to go to bed when he does? If I don’t, there’s no room in the bed for me when I get there. Yes, even after two months, we’re still adjusting to sharing a bed.)
But it’s okay. Now I read.
But the problem? Well, books, even the under $5 ones, tend to add up. And we’re trying NOT to spend money we don’t have to. The free books are okay, but they aren’t always what I want to read.
And our local library doesn’t have the greatest selection of eBooks online…
So I did a little research and guess what I found out?
The Free Library of Philadelphia has a very EXPANSIVE eBook library.
Yes, I know that I don’t live there. (I used to, tho, but that doesn’t matter.)
You can get a non-resident library card for just $15 a year.
That’s like the cost of ONE book.
Just download the form, fill it out, send it off with a check for $15 and in about two weeks, you’ll have your card. (They’ll even email you with your card number and pin BEFORE your card gets to you.)
Then?
While you’re waiting for your card, or when you get the email that your card is being mailed… download Adobe Digital Editions.
When your library card gets to you, go to the Free Library of Philadelphia’s website and search for an eBook…
And either add to cart (if it’s available) or ask for a hold (if you want to be notified when it becomes available)…
Then checkout, download and hook up your nook. The first time you hook up your nook it will “authorize” it… and then drag the book you just downloaded to your nook.
The best part? You pick the lending date… like 1, 2, or 3 weeks… and when your time is up?
It just dissappears…
So, NO LATE FEES!!!!!
Which is AWESOME for me… I’ve always bought books, because it was cheaper than paying the over due fines.
So…
If you live in a small community and your library doesn’t have an eBook library or it’s not a big one, then you can definitely go this route!
I’m off to read!
Until next time…

What a wonderful find for you. It sounds like you are really loving it.
Sometimes my vision goes blurry, it’s a health thing we still haven’t pinned down, and my ability to read goes out the window. I can do it, but it’s tough and it hurts my head. So I have started doing lots of audio books. It turns out I am acutally an audio learner so I get as much out of them this way if not more than if I’d read them.
My library has a great supply. I put it on my mp3 player and then can take it with me anywhere I go. I can even read while I clean — you know, if I decided to clean.
But one of the best things? I can do it in the dark while I’m trying to sleep. Yes, I sometimes fall asleep in the middle. But that’s okay because sleep is a good thing.
